As we age, one of the biggest issues that most of us will have to face is our deteriorating bone health and the increased chance for breaking, osteoporosis, and other bone-related issues. While you cannot stop yourself from growing old, you can make sure that your bones remain healthy by following some simple steps.

How to keep your bones healthy?

We have all been taught since childhood that calcium is the most important nutrient when it comes to maintaining good bone health. While calcium is extremely important, what most people forget is that you also need Vitamin D for the body to effectively utilise the calcium.

One of the simplest ways to improve your bone health is to consume a balanced diet that is rich in all essential nutrients. Along with a balanced diet, physical activity and avoiding certain risk factors can also help in keeping your bones healthy and strong.

Food rich in calcium

An average adult requires about 700mg of calcium every day. Food items rich in calcium include

  • Milk, cheese, and other dairy items
  • Green leafy vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, okra etc.
  • Soya beans, tofu, soya drinks with added calcium
  • Dry fruits and nuts
  • Bread and food items made from fortified flour
  • Bony fishes like sardines, anchovies etc.

While we have all heard of spinach as an excellent source of calcium, it is also rich in oxalic acid. Oxalic acid can reduce the absorption of calcium by the body and reducing spinach’s effectiveness as a good source of calcium.

Sources of Vitamin D

Like mentioned above, our body needs Vitamin D to properly absorb calcium and effectively use it. While most of us can get our daily requirement of Vitamin D from the sun, it is also necessary to supplement it through our diets.

Good sources of Vitamin D include

  • Oily fish
  • Eggs
  • Fortified fat spreads and breakfast cereals
  • Certain types of powdered milk

Who are at the most risk?

Certain groups of people are at more risk of having vitamin D and calcium deficiency. These include pregnant woman, vegans and vegetarians who do not consume milk or meat, people who cannot go out due to health reasons and women who have reached menopause. Therefore, it is important that these people try to supplement vitamin D and calcium in the form of health supplements.

When it comes to supplements to keep my bones healthy, the only one I trust is Qnet’s Nutriplus BoneHealth.

What is Nutriplus BoneHealth?
